The other day I saw a mouse in my garden. It was climbing into my birdfeeder to get some seeds to eat. You know what they say about mice? At least where I live. When you see one mouse, there’s about ten you don’t see. That intrigued me. It got me thinking. Are there more examples like this? I think there are. I decided to call it the mouse-hypothesis. You can apply it to many different things.Â
This first example is a personal one. For the past couple of years I’ve been writing blogs. Sometimes I wonder ‘does anybody read this’? I did not have a big following. I remember feeling unsure, wondering if anyone even noticed when I stopped publishing. Some of my readers reached out to me, to ask if I was ok. And to tell me my writing was missed. This meant a lot to me! Maybe the mouse-hypothesis applies here as well? Maybe there are tenfold of readers who feel like that, but don’t reach out? It got me writing again.
There’s lots of areas where you can apply this:
Ideas: for every good idea you have, there’s ten more simmering in your brain.
Clients: for every client you have, there are ten that need what you have to offer.
Planets: for every planet you discover, there’s ten you haven’t (yet) seen.
Friends
Ultimate burger recipes
etc.
This can go on indefinitely. Imagine that. For every person on your mailinglist, there are ten more who would like to read what you write. If you get them on your mailinglist, then there's tenfold of that amount of readers that’s not yet on your mailinglist. And so on. Possibilities are endless!
As I sit here in my home office, I’m wondering. What else am I not seeing? What possibilities or ideas might be just out of sight, waiting to be discovered? The more I think about it, the more curious I become. How far could this hypothesis take you in your own life? What hidden opportunities might you be missing, just waiting to be found?
My mind can get sucked into things like this. It’s sort of a rabbit hole that sparks my curiosity. Where will your curiosity lead you? Whether it's ideas, opportunities, or personal growth, the Mouse Hypothesis reminds us there’s always more than meets the eye. The real question is—are you willing to look for what’s hiding in the shadows? After all, the possibilities are endless.
All that, from seeing a mouse :)
