As you might have read in one of my previous articles, relaxation is one of the four cornerstones of physical well-being I’m researching for my Fit over 40 project.
In this article I wrote that relaxation is a bit of a blind spot for me. Realizing this gap didn’t automatically lead to change. The last couple of weeks I’ve been busy diving into the ‘Movement’ cornerstone, and did some researching into other pillars as well, but not Relaxtion. Which is exemplary, really. I just don’t seem to have any focus on relaxation. And that is exactly why I should dive in, because I do need it.
But, wait. Hold on for a second.
Am I seriously stressing about relaxation?
Yes, I guess I am.
Talking about overshooting your target. This is kind of funny.
The truth is, when I think about it, I already do all sorts of things that relax me:
Working out
Stretching after work
Cooking
Walking my dog
Reading a book
Sit by the fireplace with a good beer
Taking a hot shower or bath
Most of these things I do on a daily basis. So what am I mumbling about not having a focus on relaxation? Maybe that is where the answer lies: focus. Awareness of the thing I already do to relax.
So, I’m shifting my focus a little bit. Instead of focusing on ‘big relaxation efforts’, I’m going to build more awareness of what I’m already doing right now to relax. Curious if this will take the pressure off! I’ll be keeping an eye on how this mindset shift affects my overall well-being so stay tuned!
